Web Design For Your Own Website

What and what not about web design

By now you must have selected either one of the option on "ways to build your own website". Option 1 or Option 2.
Which ever option you choose, consideration must be allowed on the importance of Web Design.
If you select option 2, Sitebuildit!, you will be guided in details by the manual provided.
There are not many fixed guidelines or rules to follow if you are planning for a personal homepage. You can design it to your own taste and liking.

But, for affiliate or merchant sites, your Web Design then becomes a totally different ball game.

Before starting your web design work, get a pen and stack of papers and create a "site map" of sorts, listing what pages you will have on the site and what the purpose of EACH PAGE on the site will be.
A good web design is only a function of good planning and not just "good looks". Design your site for your audience and their expectations. A clean, simple, professional design will only help the sales process but also understand that different design factors may influence conversion with different markets.
Learn all that you can about web design and continue learning new things everyday. Web design is the very first thing that visitors will notice so you should stimulate them from that element. When you do that, it will help build the trust.

Remember, creating your web site with quality design will bring customers who will trust you with their purchases. Creating a site that will allow someone to find the information or product they are looking for quickly will be seen as a site to bookmark and revisit again. Visitors visit your sites because there's something they want to accomplish -- maybe even buy your product. The ultimate failure of a website is failing to provide the correct information users are looking for. At times the information is not there and you tend to lose the sale and trust.

Navigation and functionality of a site are also important. Navigation is just as important because you want your visitors to find what they're looking for and use your tools effectively. Poor web design include "navigational failure". Common mistakes include different types of navigation on the same site, poorly worded links so the visitor doesn't know where he'll go if he clicks, no links back to the home page, confusing links to the home page.
All web navigation must have answer for the following:
  • Where am I?
  • Where have I been?
  • Where can I go next?
  • Where's the Home Page?
Navigation must be simple and consistent. Make it easy! Organize your resources in a logical, simple manner.

You should be able to look at the home page of any site and figure out what the site is about within a few seconds. If you can't, your site is a failure.
A regular web surfer commented:
"One of the first things I look at when visiting a seller's web site is the design and navigation. I would not shop from a site if the web design looks amateurish."

The golden rule of doing business on the Web is "Don't do anything that gets in the way of your visitors."

A good web design is done in such a way that the Final Destination Page is no more than TWO clicks away from whereever the user comes in. One click is even better but that gets hard to manage on a big site.

Affiliate sites should be simple and easy to use. A typical affiliate page should really have the basic information, some pre-sell of the product and easy-to-use links through to related products to help the visitor find what they want. It shouldn't be ugly, but a nice clean layout with a good logo is usually ideal. Avoid any designs that look like advertisements

Most people visit a web site to solve one or more of the following three problems.
  • They want/need information
  • They want/need to make a purchase / donation.
  • They want/need to be entertained.
With these in mind, try to avoid the following mistakes frequently make when designing your web site:
  • Text is Text. Don't use graphics or Flash for text.
    • The first reason is it increases the size of the page,
    • the second reason is its not search engine friendly,
    • the third reason is the graphics are often of poor quality,
    • and lastly, mistakes are hard to correct.
  • Design sites with so many pretty pictures in them that the viewer is too busy looking at the photo gallery to get down to business. You want the PRODUCTS to wow the viewers, not the site design.
  • Colors used are overly bright and dark. When designing, think about simple color schemes, and maybe plain background colors.
  • Sites showing too many descriptionless pix, especially if the products look very similar to each other. Let people know what the differences are, use text along with the pictures.
  • Too many trick designs will confused the average guy in the street. They want to find it easy. Easy is the key word.
  • Design with frames and using java, flash, etc...which search engines don't like. Use them only if you have to and if there isn't any way around them.
  • Designers are also fond of using small text. "If people can't see it, they will flee from it."
Finally, the content quantity of each page.
It's very easy to keep adding material to your home page until it gets out of control. With so much content vying for attention it's initially impossible for the eye to settle on one thing. People get confused and people leave. Pages with lots of disparate material means you have failed to organize your site properly -- probably a combination of not planning your site and poor navigation.

A friendly advice:
First, forget about joining programs and the MONEY for the time being. All of that will come with a properly designed site. But, until you have that properly designed site, its pretty useless to concentrate on making money since you're not likely to make any.

Once that is done, you'll have a good idea of where to go next.
