Link Trading - Reciprocal Linking

Links = Interconnections Between Web Sites
Owner of Websites create links as a pathway leading from one website to another. There are links virtually on every page and when click on by the surfer will be directed to another page, either within the same web site or to a different website entirely.

There are three basic link types:
  • Internal Links - visitors are directed to different pages within the same site itself.
  • Outbound Links - visitors are directed to pages of another website.
  • Inbound Links - visitors from other websites are directed to your site.
When talking about SEO - search engine optimization, linking is one of the important factor to achieve a higher ranking with search engines. Of the three types of link mentioned above, inbound links add more value to the search engines, including Google, MSN Search and Yahoo. The more inbound or incoming links that a website receive, the better the website will rank in search engines.

Internet marketers and ebusiness website owners realise the important of link trading or link exchange and more commonly termed as reciprocal linkings. Many still do not know or understand how reciprocal linking should be carried out. They just simple request for link exchange with any tom, dick and harry website. This is totally wrong.

Important points to note when requesting for link exchange partners.
  • Quality of the site.
  • Topic and theme relevancy - sites sharing a similar or complementary theme and topics to your site.
  • Anchor links with keyword rich text.
  • Sites with higher Page Rank.
  • If possible, links that originate within content pages
The "DO NOT" of reciprocal linking.
  • Avoid "bad neighborhoods" best known as "Link Farm".
  • Do not get involved in linking scheme solely designed to trick the search engines into providing higher rankings.
  • Avoid linking to sites that are unrelated to one another in any way.
  • Avoid sites that have no theme or topic relevance to your own site.
    • All internal links to a page are helpful, add value if the link contains keyword rich link anchor text relevant to the receiving page, distributes Google PageRank to the various pages, aids site navigation as a service to visitors.

    A one way inbound link placed voluntarily by another webmaster to the content of a Web page is call "A natural link". Various search engines give more importance to natural links with theme relevant. The best way to attract natural links is to provide good website content.
