Selecting a suitable Domain Name

What is a Domain Name ?

Domain Names are used in URLs to identify particular Web pages. For example, in the URL http://www.affiliatesolutions4u.com/index.html, the domain name is affiliatesolutions4u.com. (A name that identifies one or more IP addresses.)
Each domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. A few examples:

.gov - Government agencies
.edu - Educational institutions
.org - Organizations (nonprofit)
.mil - Military
.com - commercial business
.net - Network organizations

Every Web server requires a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate domain names into IP addresses because the Internet is based on IP addresses, not domain names.

You need to have a domain name for your website, just like a house that needs an address. You can register for a domain name on a yearly basis or multiple years.

Selecting a domain name for your own personal homepage is easy but for commercial purpose it's a little complicated. Complicated in the sense that you need to consider the competition with others for search engine placement, branding and other factors. You can live without these complications and just get a normal sensible domain.

We will go through what constitute a good domain name.

1)Selecting the type of TLD.

.com is the accepted format for commercial sites and is seen in such a way by potential customers. On the commercial aspect of choosing a domain name, .com site still outsell the variable extension site as it gets the benefit of global marketing for the internet. When people talk and think of the world wide web ".com" is the word.
.org is being used by both non-profit organisation and commercial but it's going to be enforce for nonprofit organisations only for new registrations, so it's going to become much less commercialised in the future.
.info is a good TLD for non commercial content sites, maybe content with a sales spin.
.net is mostly use as an alternative to .com or if you happen to provide internet infrastructure.
.biz is pretty uncommon, even though it's been around for a while and it is being used increasingly by spammers.
.us the latest addition, is a good, strong branding to use for a site, either commercial or informational.

If you are considering a commercial type of website, .com would be appropriate, but sometimes the name you required is not available, so what options do you have. You can either use another TLD or select another name.

Are there any disadvantages (search engine wise) to having .org or .info or .net instead of .com?
There are lot of arguements regarding the using of domain names and TLD to enhance search engine ranking. Just remember that each search engine uses their own algorithms and some maybe the same for certain particular criteria. To my understanding "domain names don't make any difference to the search engines".

I would not go crazy over selecting a domain name but follow the basis to get one good domain name.

TLD - First option - .com , second option - .net and third option - .info .
Relevant keyword-rich domain name, eg. if your site is about wheat farming, name it wheat-farming.com or farming-wheat.com . Keyword-rich domain names does help boost rankings a little. It is a factor in most search engines algorithms. Don't get carried away! Just having a keyword-rich domain name is not going to make a great difference in ranking in most search engines.
Short and easy to remember name like, yahoo, google or amazon. Domain name that is easy for the user to remember is hundred times more important then most other factors and almost as important as the content on the site. Simply put, shorter and simpler domain names work best. They allow visitors to easily remember them, so they can visit repeatedly. Long domain names have disadvantages, not only are long domain names difficult to remember but also hard to type into a browser. Errors are more likely to occur. With errors comes frustration, so be wary.
It doesn't matter what your domain name is, it depends on what you intend to do with it. Go for names that mean something and because of that they automatically will get you more targeted visitors.

Bear in mind, though, that keywords in a domain are only a tiny part of the SEO picture. The fact is that .com is the accepted format for commercial sites and is seen in such a way by potential customers. It is well and good to use regional specific urls if in fact that is your market place but if you are to be seen globally .com is still your best bet.

It is also necesary to note that URL name is (although very important) just one factor of hundreds that will lead to the success or failure of a site.

As to availability of domain names, .com will never be full. Availability is as vast as the English language.
Country domains like .co.uk, .com.au, .de etc have been around for sometime and have as much "respect" (if not more) than .com addresses. If you're targetting non-US audiences it's not a bad idea naming your domain using the suffixes.

You can choose a good domain name the old fashioned way by thinking up something cool and a balance between name recognition and search engine friendly. Optimally, you want both to be high.

Remember, customers are coming from the offline world so naming is not only important for the search engines but how people view your business including your name and your content.
